BIOGRAPHY.

Ewen Spencer graduated from The University of Brighton School of Art and Design in 1997. His degree show project on the UK's Northern Soul scene introduced him as a perceptive documenter of British sub-cultures. On starting out as a freelance photographer Ewen quickly gained commissions from magazines such as The Face, Sleazenation and i-D.

Ewen's documentary images regularly graced the pages of London and New York's style press and were included in "SEEN - Black Style UK" published by Booth-Clibborn in 2001. Tipped by Martin Parr as the most promising newcomer in the pages of Vissionaire magazine in 2002, Ewen also gained a reputation for his work with bands such as The Streets, The White Stripes and New Order, creating some of the most celebrated cover art over the last decade.

Images from Ewen's project concerning British adolescents "Teenagers" continue to be shown at various galleries and museums around the globe and have found their way into many public and personal collections as well as being shortlisted for a prize at the Rencontres d'Arles 2004.

Ewen continues to pursue his interest in urban teen culture. In 2005 he completed a series of images taking a look at an extended group of teenagers on Londons 'Grime' Scene. The project came to fruition through the publishing of a book and a touring exhibition called 'Open Mic'. Works from Open Mic are now included in the Courtauld institute of Arts, East Wing Collection.

Commissions have included a limited edition photographic booklet for the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix, advertising campaigns for Sony Walkman and Nokia and a recent study looking at the reported rise in teenage violence around South London for Stern Magazine. Ewen is also a regular contributor to The Fader magazine in New York.
